BUSINESS EMAIL COMPROMISE (BEC)

Tom Schultz, CPP, Manager, Fraud Governance & Consulting | Legal, Corporate & Compliance Group | BMO Financial Group

Business email compromise (BEC) continues to plague businesses of all sizes.  Since January 2015, there has been a 1,300% increase in identified exposed losses, now totaling over $3B¹.  These crimes are often perpetrated using technical (malware) and human (social engineering) techniques.  Tom Schultz, BMO Financial Group’s Fraud Governance Manager, will discuss common BEC scheme methods and how you can better protect your organization from them.

¹According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

Tom Schultz has over 15 years of experience within the fraud and physical security industries in both the private and government sectors.  He began his career investigating financial crimes for a financial institution.  He then moved onto conducting fraud and corruption investigations for a government agency before returning to the private sector.  He has provided oversight of people and property protection programs and understands the strong linkage between effective physical security measures and fraud mitigation.

Mr. Schultz is currently responsible for managing fraud and criminal risks at BMO Financial Group by providing guidance and direction on a range of complex fraud issues and initiatives.

Mr. Schultz holds the Certified Protection Professional designation from the American Society for Industrial Security, successfully completed the Inspector General Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.  In addition, he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Business Administration degree with Distinction from the Keller Graduate School of Management.
